Updated version, Different name?

I'm watching this movie having serious deja-vu. I've never seen this movie(1930), Yet as I watch it, I'm remembering it scene for scene.

*The school kids getting all hyped up by their teacher to join the military. *Once they're recruits, they realize they know their drill sgt from home. But now he's no longer the friendly guy they knew, he's become a tyrant.
*The blanket party beating they give their drill sgt. for being a tyrant
*The gritty, happy old seasoned vet who's going to show the new recruits the ropes at the front.
*Negotiating with the mess officer on the food line for larger portions, then that seasoned vet orders more food for his men.

I'm remembering this very vividly in another movie. I do remember one guy getting singled out by the drill sgt, and repeatedly having the squat in the mud over and over. That Exact scene IS NOT in this 1930 version.

Does anybody know what I'm thinking of?
