This was posted last month...and nobody noticed.

Thoughts?

There is already an imdb account for the remake.

sweet action

But uh, I can't think of a single thing that could look better in this story without becoming a nuisance. At least as I just saw it. The battle scenes were pretty amazing IMHO. A completely new audio track would significantly improve the original in many places, but if the point of the war noises was that real explosions make your eardrums bleed then they get that across fine as-is!

Seriously, Pearl Harbor and Flyboys? And this story? What, bullet time? A CG plane at the end with a shot following the killing bomb to the ground? Obscene. No one would do that.

Uwe Boll isn't directing, I assume.

Just a cynical moneymaking exercise to remake a film that doesnt need to be remade (The Italian Job, Ladykillers, Poseidon Adventure etc). Why don't they just make a nice new digitally restored print of the original? However i suspect the problem lies that many kids of today would rather watch a remake with Josh Harnett/Justin Timberlake/Matt Damon or whatever big name they plan to cast in it.

Is Hollywood so devoid of ideas that they now have to start plagiarising a piece of celluloid art like this?

The scary parts of this is when they talk about the script:

"By creating new storylines ourselves, we believe this modern rendition will encompass greater depth and historical context, but still remain congruent with the spirit of Erich Maria Remarque's work."

and

"We plan on recreating the spectacular visual ambience of trench warfare - miles and miles of desolate, bombed out and cratered landscape - we also intend to add more texture and emotional layering to the overall story."

So there wasn't any depth or emotion in the book? Why add new storylines when there are so many great ones in the novel that they will not even have the time to get to. Screenwriters should never assume that they can do one better than the original authors of the classics. Time and time again they have been proven wrong.

OH MY GOD!!!!

Not to worry.
It'll disappear with hardly a trace like John Boy's did, leaving the original to carry on magnificently as usual.

Ah! Now we see the violence endemic in the system!

This is why I get so pissed at Hollywood. Essentially, writers can't come up with whole ideas of their own, so they steal a popular work, and then "re-create" it by adding things that don't need to be added, but then they can feel important. Quit being so lazy, and write your own damn story. And if you wish to do a remake or adapt a book, do so, don't "re-imagine" it.

a remake could work if it was true to the original but i dunno... filmed with german actors or german speaking actors... some of the battle scenes could be better and at the same time like the original be true to the equipment... the remake took a few shortcuts (turkish mausers instead of Gewehr 98s)

Well, the 1930 is different from the 1970 version which was a remake, but with an IMO better script and details I really liked: when the new recruits show up in steel helmets instead of the old pickelhaubes for example - I was quite impressed by that. One thing that really ruined that one was Thomas, who even if he seems like a very nice guy lacks the charisma to be on a screen. And of course, they were all speaking English, not good.

No, if they are remaking this book, I do not want to see big name Hollywood stars in a CGI crapfest, turning a very tragic and bloody war into an adventure film. Take the original or even better, the 1970 script and turn it over to a German film studio and let them do the film. Germans can make great films - just give them the chance.

Of course, this is all said in the event of a remake, in order to limit the damage. Personally I would prefer to let this be as it is. A great film based on an even better book.

Understand that Pitt will play Kat, DiCaprio will play Himmelstoss, and Cruise will play the lead.

Even though I usually hate remakes it sounds like actual passion and effort are going into this one, so it sounds like it might end up being pretty good.

Well, the last remake was made in 1979, or 43 years ago.
It could probably use an update.
We know it will be all about the CGI, don't we?
