Giving a blanket party to the D.I.

Theres that scene in the movie and in the book where they give the D.I. a blanket party. I thought blanket parties were only given to certain recruits who messed up too much and got everybody else in trouble. I don't see how the recruits could get away with giving the D.I. a blanket party.

They didn't get away with anything. The next morning they were sent to the trenches as was intended. A month in the stockade would only have spared them from the danger and death.

I don't remember for the movie but if memory serves, in the book he was drunk so come morning he wouldn't have any idea who was responsible when he sobered up.

Gunnery Sergeant Hartman (Full Metal Jacket) got a bullet in the chest from Private Pyle.
In truth, nothing a drill sergeant can do to his recruits can be as bad as the real deal; war.
That is the truth.

It wasn't a blanket party in the proper sense. They simply wanted to beat the crap out of him as a revenge. He never saw their faces or heard their voices when they caught him, so he could have never known who exactly they were or how many of them. So they were quite on the safe side there. And another reason why they did it was because they were due to leave for the front in the morning, so they wouldn't be around by the time he would have sobered up anyway.

That was in the movie. In real life a recruit would never be able to get live ammo outside the firing range.
