According to the DVD subtitles, the man says: "It might buck you up."

I agree, though, that it does sound a little bit like he is dropping an F-bomb. Hope this helps.

Remember this was pre-code. Early talky they probably were trying to see how far they could go. If you watch some of the silents and if you can read lips you'll notice quite a few f-bombs and gds and such. The next time you see Sadie Thompson pay special attention to Gloria Swanson's mouth, she lets roll throughout the film.

The silent version of WHAT PRICE GLORY? may be the king of the silent epithets. Edmund Lowe and Victor McLaglen had a field day spouting profanities. And you don't to be an expert lip-reader to figure out most of them.

"May I bone your kipper, Mademoiselle?"
