Not only was he listed in the credits (one of the writers), but he's also in a few of the early scenes of this movie.

Very recognizable actor from the 20th. Often wrote, and acted.

He may have been uncredited as an actor, but not as a writer.

Co-writer! That explains it. I thought it was funny that in the first scene they're at Gleason Songwriting (or something like that) and out walks James Gleason as the head of the place.
