aspect ratio...

A segment in Wings was shown in a Magnascope format, which essentially enlarged the picture as it appeared on the screen. What I would like to know is whether it made the picture wider (as in widescreen), or if the picture still had the same aspect ratio and was simply shown at a larger size overall. Does anyone know?

He was a poet, a scholar, and a mighty warrior. He was also the most shameless exhibitionist since Barnum and Bailey.

Magnascope merely enlarged the image. It did not make it any wider.

I went to see Wings at the Academy when it was restored. A note was made that they could not show the aerial scenes in Magnascope because they had no screen (indeed, NOBODY has such a screen) of a height that could accomodate it.

Well, technically, you COULD do Magnascope on any screen, although the screen size would be reduced from normal, which would mean you'd need all new lenses, and then you'd need a zoom lens and traveling masking for the opening effect. In reality, they didn't run it with Magnascope because it's more trouble than its worth.

Hey, it's just the explanation they gave...

Besides the Magnascope part, it's nice to know that there is still interest in this movie.
