Wings vs The Artist

While I liked The Artist, the black and white silent film angle was a gimmick that gave it plenty of attention during awards season. I actually like the story in Wings better.

So really it's not a fair comparison, since the Artist isn't actually a silent film from the silent film era. It just pays homage to them.

Curious how a color silent film version of the Artist would have done... Change up the gimmick...

Me personally, I find Wings to be good "for its time."

The Artist is just good. Everything is better. Acting, cohesiveness, humor. Damn I love that dog.

The Artist is WAY higher on the rewatchability scale for me.

I know there is often a tendency to love old things because they're old - but for whatever reason, I don't have that in me. I just look at things objectively. I got the Artist rated 9 where Wings is a charitable 6.

It's a tie. I gave them both a 6.5/10.

Having seen both, Wings, hands down. I've watched it perhaps three times, including right now. Was a 9 for me, but I'm going to raise it to a low ten. It's the relationships that do it for me. Normally I dislie war films. The Artist I give an eight. If I don't see it again, it wouldn't matter. Loved that dog, though!

Wings is a triumph rarely matched in the history of film. The Artist is a somewhat entertaining film that, although considered "great" in today's lackluster world of film, wouldn't have made dollar one in any year before 1967. It is mediocre at best.

Comparing The Artist to Wings, or nearly any of the great films from before 1967, is an exercise for the young and ignorant. Fear not....you will age.
