Why Did Mary Get Fired?

She was caught naked next to an unconscious man (Jack), so did the soldiers think she raped him? Would she have gotten fired for having sex with Jack if he were conscious? Would Jack have gotten in any trouble at all, or is this all about blaming the women? Would Jack have gotten in any trouble if she were unconscious? A soldier later suggests that Mary got fired because military women like to get drunk and loose when they're off duty, as if that's any different from what male soldiers do.

Perhaps it was a case of dual standards or of women in the services being expected to have higher morals than male soldiers, but Mary was clearly required to resign (or face dismissal) because she was believed to have been intimate out of wedlock with Jack.

Interesting seeing things like this from today's perspective.

Poorly Lived and Poorly Died, Poorly Buried and No One Cried
