shareYOU'LL HAVE A TOUGH TIME SEEING THE FULL VERSION OUTSIDE OF ENGLAND. KEVIN BROWLOW'S MAGNIFICENT RECONSTRUCTION (SEE HIS BOOK TO UNDERSTAND THE PASSION THIS FILM EVOKES) HAS BEEN SUPRESSED OUTSIDE OF ENGLAND BY THE COPPOLAS. NOT AN ACTION ONE WOULD EXPECT FROM A MASTER FILMMAKER AND CINEASTE BUT HIS LOYALTY TO HIS FATHER'S SCORE FOR THE AMERICAN VERSION HAS RESULTED IN HIM SERVING AN INJUNCTION AGAINST BROWLOW'S, GANCE APPROVED, DEFINITIVE VERSION - THERE ARE EVEN TITLE CARDS EXPLAINING SCENES LOST TO THE RAVAGES OF TIME - THE EXPERIENCE IS OVERWHELMING AND BREATHTAKING IN SCALE.
I SAW IT AT THE ROYAL FESTIVAL HALL IN LONDON LAST SUMMER AND IT WAS INCREDIBLE... WORTH GETTING ON A PLANE FOR, NO MATTER WHERE YOU LIVE.
SHAME ABOUT FRANCIS... HE IS DEPRIVING THE FILM COMMUNITY OF ONE OF ITS MASTERPIECES.
I see the film is available on dvd, but it is titled "Napoleon - Bonaparte 1927 DVD Francis Ford Coppola". Can anyone confirm that this edition does not have Carl Davis's score on the soundtrack, please. From the postings I've seen it seems likely that it doesn't. Thanks.
shareNo, it doesn't have Davis's score, but the much inferior one - in my opinion, anyway - by Coppola's dad Carmine. And of course it's the shorter version sanctioned by Coppola, running some 225 minutes as against Kevin Brownlow's 330. A great shame.

It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that sting
As far as I know there exists 3 dvd versions today - all of them Coppola-versions :-(
The Australian release and a chinese bootleg of that one - and a spanish 2-dvd release. I would figure that the spanish version is the one to choose as the AU, single-disc version is heavily compressed, transfered from a NTSC, non-progressive source- a quite terrible release to be honest.
The good news is that the upcoming release, that is the fourth dvd version to be, is by OPTIMUM!!!! A great company, equal to Criterion. You can find information here: http://www.bbfc.co.uk/website/Classified.nsf/0/027C7B07AFA0601E802572AB002F3247?OpenDocument
So we know that this is the Coppola version (%&¤%# - and he is a filmlover????), ut the picture quality will probably be excellent!!!!
I have heard rumors about legal problems though which might cancel the release - I really hope this won´t be!!!!
"Run Time 223m 1s" : so this is the coppola version and not the brownlow one.
