Anachronism in Napoleon Movie

Why didn't Abel Gance do all his homework to ensure historical accuracy? As a nit-picker, the British flags used in the scenes in the movie are all wrong. They all date from 1801, not being used in the 1790s as shown in the movie. I always wonder at the inept sloppiness demonstrated by moviemakers who aspire to create great cinematic historical epics, yet are careless about authentic details. It really should not have been difficult with all the people involved in the film production to check the accuracy of artifacts used to depict scenes correctly.

Dear Nitpicker, They didn't have movie cameras to film British flags in the 1790s, so to show them in a film would be all wrong! ;)
