Isn't Coppola sitting ontop of the rights to this thing? He's been lying about releasing it for years.

reply

I don't know about lying, but yes, I understand he does hold the American release rights to the version released in the early '80s. The way I heard it, he wants to release Napoleon with his father Carmine's score, and others want the Carl Davis score.

Meanwhile, Brownlow has made more, fuller reconstructions in the intervening years that have no Carmine Coppola score, and Francis wants a piece of that release, too. It's all very complicated and proprietory.

Too bad this business is such a Business!

Are there plans for a release, though? Last I heard they were gearing for 2005, but then things got scrapped.

My guess is that it's currently too legally complicated. I'd be more than willing to ask FF Coppola and Kevin Brownlow personally, if I had their e-mail addresses!

All I can add, over a year later, is "Yeah!"

--Jack, you have debauched my sloth!

reply

Almost five years later and still "Yeah!"

Wouldn't the problem be solved if they released both versions on one mammoth blu-ray?

reply

Haven't looked into it in some time, but I'm betting the legal tangles have only gotten worse.

reply

They showed the complete version on screen a couple of years ago in California with the Carl Davis score. But that's as far as it's gone in the US.
