Myrna Loy

Holy god, she looks amazing in this movie. I wish she had played The Girl instead. Did anybody else catch her during the scene where Jakie finds out his girlfriend is going away to New York? Incredible.

Yes, indeed, that's my wish too! Even then she had star quality. And just think, if she had played The Girl, then in the mid-30's, WB could have re-released it as "MYRNA LOY in THE JAZZ SINGER. Also featuring WARNER OLAND, ROSCOE KARNS, WILLIAM DEMEREST, and Al Jolson"

She was absolutely breathtaking in her 20 seconds, or so, on screen. Her face was simply amazing. I always thought she was one of the very few actresses of the classic era whose looks are timeless, given that she could be considered gorgeous even nowadays. She was obviously destined to become a star and had to fight hard for it, since beauty alone doesn't guarantee a successful career. If so, Adrienne Ames (another stunning, timeless beauty) should have been one of the biggest stars back then.

My son (22) and I just watched a Myrna Loy film the other day, and he commented that Myrna looked absolutely regal. I have to agree. She definitely had stage presence and star quality.

Myrna Loy's career started with her playing "exotic" Asian characters who are usually unsympathetic.
She finally achieved stardom when she signed with MGM and was cast as Nora in THE THIN MAN (a great film).
Since then, she had been pretty much typecast as "the perfect wife", which she played to perfection.
