Just caught it on my local PBS station and cannot think of any film pre-1930 that had such great movement or continuity. The scene when he overloads the cannon, it drops to a dangerous trajectory, he runs to the front of the train, and a slight curvature causes the cannon shot to sail ahead without destroying his engine is incredible. This film never slows down. So good, it is unrankable.
shareThe greatest thing about Buster Keaton's "The General", that makes it stand out above all of Chaplin's work, was that the comedy was always served BY the plot and characters, and never vice versa. Keaton was always able to build such strong narratives and screenplay structure that the humanistic styles of his contemporaries just don't compare. His dedication to historical accuracy is impeccable and his compositions in this film are always fascinating and fun to watch.

to the OP: i wont argue, but i do disagree.
it is really an amazing film though.
"One of the most common praises for Singin' in the Rain can also be applied to this, I think (I'm kind of echoing what you said here). Just like Singin' in the Rain is one of the few musicals with a legitimate plot and characters that we carea bout, the General is one of the few comedies that works as a great film with a great story in addition to being funny."
Kind of have to disagree with you there Kurtz. I'm no big expert in musical (haven't seen many), but when I recently saw Singin' in the Rain it was highly enjoyable, but what annoyed me was exactly that they hadn't bothered much with the plot at all - it kind of shows that the songs were written before the script. Especially irritating was the fact that the (few) obstacles they faced were so superficial, you never felt for a moment that things could go wrong (the silent movie actress with the shrieking voice didn't exactly make for an intimidating antagonist).
Maybe you right relatively speaking though, comparing to other films in the genre, haven't seen enough of them to tell. Still a fun flick. Gonna see the General just now, maybe I'll agree more with your opinion on that one.
cheers.
