Ive never seen a silent film.

Hi, Ive never seen a silent film but I have read that this is a very good movie. Im indifferent weather or not a movie has subtitles, but I feel like Silent films would take some time to get used to.

Is it hard to get into the story? I really hope I dont sound naive lol

I don't think so. As a matter of fact, I think that the lack of sound brings out more emotion. So the story resonates more, at least with me.

If nothing else, you'll be in awe of the sets. Metropolis is eye candy.

There are, of course, some clunky parts (the robot dance is really awkward). But I think overall it holds up really well.

Oh yeah, I looked up a trailer online and the sets for a 20's movie look outstanding. I'm gonna watch it tomorrow, its recording on tmc. Also, I watched Casablanca for the first time recently and if the score is anything like that, i know Ill enjoy it.

Expand your horizons -- watch it. Silent films can be amazing. They really aren't hard to follow at all. And this one is a classic.

If you've never seen a silent film and are looking to see a great one I recommend The General. It's significantly shorter than Metropolis and the story is a lot more simple to follow and certainly more entertaining to watch. Metropolis also has pieces of the film missing which is a huge deterrent.

I recommend starting with some silent comedies, such as Chaplin or Keaton or Harold Lloyd...but that could be because I'm more partial to silent comedies than dramas.

If you're not taking any steps forward, you're not moving at all.

Metropolis was released shortly before the end of the silent era (1929/1930) and I think it certainly is one of the more accessible silent films for those who have never seen a silent before.

There are, by the way, lots and lots of very impressive silent films with high production values and great sets. Altough it may require some time and effort to get accustomed to silents, it will certainly pay off. Make sure to watch properly restored versions (i.e. don't settle for cheap public domain versions with bad image quality, missing tinting, missing important scenes, featuring unsuitable music, having wrong framerates/speed etc. as they may be perfectly able to ruin the experience).
