It's good, but a bit flawed
Visually, this movie is incredible and even some of the performances by Briggite Helm seem incredibly powerful and memorable, I love the scene where Maria is duplicated and then later used to control the masses to destroy the worker's city. The art design is almost perfect and some of the cinematography is outstanding to this day. However, there are clear problems with it.
Firstly, the script is somewhat lousy. Some of the dialogue is vague and there are a bunch of plot holes, for example, why not automate the heart machine? How is there a class divide when there can't be an economy, because Metropolis doesn't export anything, make any produce or seemingly buy or sell anything? With no enforcement, how did the worker's morale stay low enough to maintain their oppressed state for so long? Why did the workers not find anything strange with evil Maria? What is the purpose of the heart machine? There's a bunch of plot holes, but other than that, the story is still entertaining enough to keep me interested.
Lastly, the only other problem is the pacing. The odd dream sequences and the redundant filler scenes pad out the movie too much for its own good. It could still have been a very fast-paced and concise film if some of these scenes were edited out completely.
I recommend this to classic sci-if fans and people interested in German expressionism.
