Just Saw It: Part II

I can't believe I never saw this wonderful picture. This is surely one of the movies that people afraid of silents (as I have always been) should cut their teeth on.

Can someone tell me about the three-strip colour in 1925. I am not (nor have I ever been) a student of film, so the appearance of Techicolor i such an old film intrigues me.

Good, I did look for a thread about the color but couldn't find one. I must admit I was a bit shocked!!!! I agree this film was great, and was surprised by the special effects as well.

I hope you enjoy Wyler's splashy remake; it was "Ben Hur" to me before seeing this picture.

Thank you for that link. I have always been fascinated by the emergence of color (and sound) in film. I was amazed at not only how much could be done without sound in 'Ben Hur', but also how much could be clarified with the titles presented during the scenes.

I'd love to read what you have to say about the 1959 version.

Yes, thanks for me as well. I did ask a simular question about tints when first watching silent films, and it took a while for an answer. Not to imply early filmmakers were inept, however am always surprised at what they were able to 'pull off', and how quickly they learned "new tricks"....

I like some of the special effects that were used then sometimes then some used now. I did think the 'star' scene was stunning....

Agree with you there....was watching it with family and we all were wondering about the size of the wall alone, before it collapsed....
