Has anyone seen the cameo appearances of famous actors?.

It is said that Lillian Gish, Douglas Fairbanks, Harold Lloyd and John Gilbert are in the crowd scene in 'Ben-Hur', has anyone seen them?.

reply

A little help which crowd scene there was more than one. Chariot race, sea galley battle, victory parade, etc etc.

reply

Oops, sorry. The Chariot race.

reply

Hopefully Lloyd was wearing his glasses that would make an ID a bit easier!

reply

LOL. Yeah see whzt you mean, Harold Lloyd looked so completly different without them.

reply

Lots of people extra-d in the chariot race scene, simply to see it. If those people were there, they weren't there to do cameos, and there's no reason why you'd be able to pick them out of the crowd.

I'm starting to think that these famous actors appeared on the set to watch filming, but we'll probably never find them. Most of the crowd were made up by dummies that moved when pulled by a hidden leaver.

Besides IMDb I've never heard that John Barrymore was one of the visitors.

I'm wondering if it's an urban legend. I've looked at that scene and there is no way you'd recognize any of them (even if they were there).

I'm wondering why would Chaplin, Fairbanks, Pickford etc show up at MGM a rival studio?.

A documentary I watched called 'Hollywood' narrated by James Mason showed that the crowd was basically made up of dummies that would be raised and lowered by a hidden leaver.

A lot of urban legends are passed around about Hollywood. I wouldn't be surprised if this was another one.

Cameos didn't exist before Around the World in 80 Days

There is no "off" position on the genius switch.

reply

Where did you get that? Alfred Hitchcock was doing them in his own films as far back as 1927. Babe Ruth appeared in Harold Lloyd's Speedy in 1928.

reply

Hitchcock for sure and the most often cited. Bing Crosby in the Bob Hope "The Princess and the Pirate" (1944), classic cameo. Babe Ruth indeed has a good one in the silent film "Speedy"!

reply

And let's not forget the Three Stooges' sudden (and hilarious!) appearance in "My Sister Eileen' (1942).

Chaplin does a cameo in Show people (1928).

I haven't seen any of the famous folk in this version of Ben Hur, but Bing Crosby and Bob Hope are clearly visible in the audience watching the circus, in "Greatest Show on Earth."
