Perhaps one of the best movies ever

This is one cool movie! It's one of the best ever ever. Just had to post it.

I found the realsim and brutality of the times so visceral! I was able to watch the restored version, and wish that there was more! I hated to see the story end, but I wonder how many scoundrels out west during that time period were truly like the protagonist!

No wonder women banded together for prohibition...they were being beaten to death by drunken fools... oh wait... that story line was just on Dateline or 20/20 the other night.

What a statement about 'humanity'.

I understand what you're saying, Reslyn. And there's no doubt that alcohol is one of the worst destructive forces in society.

But... McTeague wasn't a "scoundrel", certainly not at the beginning. He was just a very simple bear of a man who wanted to live and... well, just live, I suppose. To make a living - and perhaps have a good time every now and then, with a couple of friends, over beer.

To me, his transformation into a brute - with a little help of his lovely wife ;) - is one of the many beauties of this film.

Zasu Pitts also gives one of the best performances ever. Unforgettable.

"Watch me run a 50-yard dash with my legs cut off!"

The ending was one of the best perhaps but it took so long to get there. I saw a 4 hours version. 7/10.
