From the American CLASSIC?

McTeague was published in 1899. So how come it took only 25 years to become a classic, and THE American classic to boot?

reply

Maybe because Frank Norris died young? People seem to become much more praised if they die, like Heath Ledger. His death was pretty much all the marketing The Dark Knight needed. Just a thought.

Well, I don't know .... Stephen Crane also died young (at 28) in 1900 but I think he was a rather underrated author in the 1920s. At least nobody made a film based on his novel until 1951, if we can assume that the data on IMDb are quite complete. But thanks for your opinion anyway!

Hype? Marketing can do a lot.

reply

I think I've got it! To publicize the film as from the American classic WAS a hype. But of course I can't be sure .... Anyway, thanks for the comment skiddoo.
