That "backward apostrophe" is actually a 'okina. It marks a full glottal stop; some consider it a consonant (notice I wrote A 'okina, not AN 'okina).
So Auli'i is pronounced "Auli-i" ("i" sounds like a quick long e, as in Spanish). And Hawai'i is pronounced "Havai--i" ("w" is pronounced like "v").
