Shes not portuguese nor brazilian.

So.. why?

reply

Its Cravalho. Cravalho is likely a derivative of a very common Portugese name Carvalho. She wouldnt need to be Portugese for that to happen. The Portuguese sailed damn near everywhere way back when. Wouldnt be an uncommon thing for something like this to happen over time.

It's because of the history of plantations in Hawaii, many people were brought in from around the world for cheap labor and to oversee the plantations. These included: Chinese, Japanese, Puerto Rican, Portuguese, and Filipino mostly. By this point in time, only a generation or two removed from the plantations, as our people have intermingled over the years, many of us are multiethnic/multiracial and have taken on a variety of names from the variety of languages and places represented on the islands.

A lot of Portuguese workers from the Azores and Madeira islands were brought in to work on plantations in Hawaii in the 19th century

In fact, the ukulele was invented in Hawaii as an adaptation of the Portuguese cavaquinho. So yeah there's some Portuguese in Hawaii's culture.
