How is it the unattractive Rachel Ziegler’s career skyrocketed after West Side Story and her next two films bombed yet the much hotter and more talented Barrera’s didn’t after Heights?

Two reasons:
- Barrera has forgettable mundane face. She would never "make it". Just like Amber Heard, Sienna Miller etc. Some actresses have pretty face but it's very forgettable for public to remember it and single out.
- Rachel Ziegler won lottery to be this periods: "It girl Hollywood tried to make happen". It will fail. But she will be in few more movies before Hollywood producers will give up. At least she had more memorable face.
I’ll take mundane attractive over Ziegler’s ugly mug any day.
