Sorry, I phrased that wrong. Superficial in the sense of not being dependent on the qualities of those they are assigned to. As in, a name itself has no meaning aside from what it is attached to.

My point was, the name "Halston Sage" is no more superficial than "John Smith"; they both are superficial in the sense of being arbitrarily assigned designations for someone or something.
