Paintings

I don't know anything about her and I've never seen Girls but I just found her paintings online and noticed how they're all overwhelming influenced by the art of Alice Neel. I guess as a major fan of Neel I'm a little defensive; I found her work incredibly dull with none of the color or individuality of the real Neel. Those paintings shouldn't be selling for $8,000.

here's her website: http://www.jkirke.com/
she even signs her paintings in the exact same way as Neel. Am I allowed to be annoyed?

reply

Are you an artist? Just wondering...

reply

Not an artist anymore but I am an art history student. I've loved Alice Neel for years, she's one of my favorite painters and I've written about her before. I guess I was upset that someone else was using her personal style because I feel like Neel lived a very hard life and spent decades developing her technique which is what makes her paintings so powerful. Someone else copying her work doesn't get that.

I didn't know that she painted. Just checked her work and I completely agree with you. A very very pale copy of Neel.

Wow. They are ridiculously similar. I guess that's what happens when rich kids go to art school?
