In a 2011 Perspectives on Psychological Science article, Jacob Hirsch, APS Fellow Adam Galinsky, and Chen-Bo Zhong write that people in anonymous settings tend to act on their natural disposition.

Interesting. The neat thing about psychology is that it isn't an empirical science, so it can change at the drop of a hat (and the non-empirical studies they do can be manipulated to bring the outcomes the people doing the study are looking for).

Really, not to be a smartass--but when I took psychology in college (when the Internet was new), the studies said anonymous behavior on the Internet illustrated alternate personalities for the users and did NOT reflect who they actually were.
