Sam is on record in an interview confirming Ian played a part in him winning the role:
"Was it total coincidence, or did that connection help you at all in getting the Pirates job?
I know for a fact now, today Rob Marshall told me today that when they were sort of thinking of offering me the part, he asked Ians opinion of me. So I guess, thanks Ian, because Im here! What was said, I have no idea. But nonetheless I owe a lot of my life to both of those two men, and Im very thankful and lucky to be here. Ian has really sort of been there from the beginning for me. He was the first person I saw when I got off the plane in Hawaii. From the beginning hes really taken me under his wing and given me such support and help."

So it appears, it certainly does appear to be the 'who you know' in this case. But now Claf is known himself - he doesn't need the recommendations anymore.
