Sam's 3rd project with Ian McShane!

So, first there was The Pillars of the Earth, then there was Pirates of the Caribbean, and now the Snow White movie. Sam and Ian seem to be travelling in the same casting circles.

Ian mentioned Sam for the role of Philip after working on Pillars...

which obviously led to their second project together. Not sure about how it came to be their third project - maybe Sam mentioned the role to Ian who then asked his agent to chase it for an audition?

It usually works out to 'not what you know, but who you know...'

Sam is on record in an interview confirming Ian played a part in him winning the role:

"Was it total coincidence, or did that connection help you at all in getting the Pirates job?
I know for a fact now, today — Rob Marshall told me today that when they were sort of thinking of offering me the part, he asked Ian’s opinion of me. So I guess, thanks Ian, because I’m here! What was said, I have no idea. But nonetheless I owe a lot of my life to both of those two men, and I’m very thankful and lucky to be here. Ian has really sort of been there from the beginning for me. He was the first person I saw when I got off the plane in Hawaii. From the beginning he’s really taken me under his wing and given me such support and help."

So it appears, it certainly does appear to be the 'who you know' in this case. But now Claf is known himself - he doesn't need the recommendations anymore.

I can see pretty much your whole history on the boards are dedicated to praising Sam's career to date.

I wasn't dissing him in anyway so you can relax - any guy who lands a role in a big blockbuster clearly has a spark, I was merely pointing out that a little helping hand doesn't go a miss when you're still fairly unknown (bare in mind casting took place before Pillars was broadcast - his first major role.)

So, whats the deal? - Are you Claf's younger brother, Joe? Defending big bros progress. lol.

Aww didn't realize this until you pointed it out. I find this quite cute and I don't know why.

Giving you a slow-clap, Señor Chang style.
