Streep's Girl Lands TV Break

Meryl Streep's daughter is following in her mother's Hollywood footsteps after landing her first big acting break.

Grace Gummer, Streep's 23-year-old child with husband Don Gummer, made her stage debut in New York last year in dark comedy The Sexual Neuroses of Our Parents, and now she's making the transition to the small screen to play a 17 year old in Gigantic on the kids cable network Nickelodeon.

Gummer will play the daughter of a famous celebrity couple in the series, which is due to air next year. The show will also feature Joe Mantegna's daughter Gia, 19.

Grace isn't the first Streep child to test her acting skills - her older sister Mamie, 26, appeared in the movie Taking Woodstock and epic TV mini-series John Adams.

I just worked with Grace on Gigantic and she is an absolute talent through and through. She's also kind, funny, professional, sweet, friendly and more!! If she's any indication on what kind of a person Meryl Streep is, then I'd be honored to know her too. What a beautiful person, inside and out. Thanks for a great day Grace!! Good luck with the show!

I have been hearing a lot about Grace's talent on this show. I will have to make it a point to tune in and check it out. I am very excited for her.

Rakefet is right: I taught a weekend workshop at Hartt School of music on auditioning and Streep arrived early to pick up her daughter, watching the last 40 minutes of day two. We spoke about 15 minutes and she is a staid mom who detests the glitter and fuss of Hollywood. (So she lives in Simsbury, CT) Her family is her first priority. As far as Grace, this was 13 years ago and she was a fearless actor. Bright and giving. A good deal of the workshop content was about NOT getting cast because that's more common for actors than getting cast. She understood and accepted what most teen actors do not: you can be brilliant but a tiny detail regarding the character or the actor with whom you'll be working could make someone else more castable. Look at the film "Hello Dolly" (1967) where 26 year old Barbra Streisand was cast opposite Walter Matthau as a love interest. The film failed only because she was 20 years too young. No one is better in a musical comedy than Streisand in 1967, but as Dolly Levi? No.
Grace not only saw and understood this but her contributions to the discussion helped others to see it.
