shareLiam Neeson's character was a real historical person who went to Japan as a missionary when Japan was trying to outlaw the invasive influence of Western culture. Persecuting Christians and missionaries was one of the methods they used. He gave up Christianity, became a Buddhist, and married. The 2 younger priests are completely fictional. The story is that they go to see if the rumors are true that this priest has abandoned his faith and what they find when they get there.
