I think his comments are being entirely misinterpreted. He was being playful, saying that the things Belfast is best known for were depressing things -- including his own show, which he called the most depressing show on television. If he were being serious he wouldn't be bad mouthing his own show. I've read several interviews with him where he's been very complimentary of Belfast and its people. His only gripe has been the cold, wet weather, in comparison to the other locations where it's sunny and warm.
Maybe our senses of humor are very different, but it seemed obvious to me that he wasn't serious, and I didn't come away from that interview thinking any less of Belfast. If anything has affected my opinion of that city, it's the massive overreaction. I've seen people on the internet tear him apart, say he's no longer welcome there and even threatening violence if he shows his face there again. If Belfast really wants travelers to come visit, it shouldn't behave in such an angry and humorless way and lighten up a bit! The nastiness I've seen over the last few days leaves a really negative impression.
