Game of Thrones” star Peter Dinklage is just one Emmy Award away from tying the record of three wins set by Aaron Paul (“Breaking Bad”) in the Best Drama Supporting Actor race. However, according to Gold Derby’s Emmy experts drawn from major media outlets, Dinklage will be taken down at the finish line by co-star Kit Harington. Are they right?
Harington, who many thought would be snubbed for an Emmy nomination, now has the backing of five experts who’ve chimed in with their early predictions: Eric Deggans (NPR), Joyce Eng (TV Guide), Tom O’Neil (Gold Derby), Robert Rorke (New York Post) and Paul Sheehan (Gold Derby).
Meanwhile, Dinklage only has the support of one Emmy expert: Adnan Virk (ESPN). Dinklage prevailed in 2011 under the blue ribbon panel system where a small number of voters signed affidavits that they watched episode submissions, but he also won last year under the new popular voting system. Does that mean he’s truly unbeatable going forward?
The remaining three journalists believe that Jonathan Banks (“Better Call Saul”) will earn a make-up trophy following last year’s shocking loss for the AMC drama: Matthew Jacobs (HuffPo), Matt Roush (TV Guide Magazine) and Jarett Wieselman (Buzzfeed).
Two other Best Drama Supporting Actor nominees from 2015 also earned repeat nominations this year: Ben Mendelsohn (“Bloodline”) and Michael Kelley (“House of Cards”). And 2014 nominee Jon Voight returns to the lineup following last year’s snub for Showtime’s “Ray Donovan,” which over-performed in nominations with five bids.
