Umm... it worked for Hugh Jackman. But seriously tons of people who are trained musical theater performers are in popular and action-based TV shows and movies. People just don't realize it.
Why? Because they are ACTORS who just happen to have additional skills in their chosen vocation. Plus the dance background is pretty helpful in doing fight choreography.
Also, history shows that being on a popular show and becoming famous in another non-musical genre will only enhance his chances of landing lead roles in future Broadway shows. Why? Broadway producers like getting bigger, non-theater celebrities to bolster ticket sales.
Other famous people who started in Musical Theater:
- Clint Eastwood (seriously! Look it up)
- Zachary Levi
- Brent Spiner (Data from Star Trek)
- Jesse L. Martin from Law & Order (who is also starring on The Flash as Detective West)
- Like 90% of the cast of Once Upon A Time... Josh Dallas (Charming/David) has a fabulous trained voice - youtube it now if you haven't. I know Lana Parilla (the evil queen) and Jennifer Goodwin are also trained vocally.
- James Marsden
- Matthew Bomer
- Jennifer Garner
- Jason Alexander (not action, but George Kastanza is a bit of a departure)
- AND MANY MORE THAT I AM FORGETTING RIGHT NOW
