Asa Offered Title Role in Ender's Game

This just came through yesterday: Asa Butterfield has been offered the role of Ender in the upcoming Ender's Game (2013) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1731141/), an adaptation of the classic sci-fi novel from Orson Scott Card. You can read one of the news stories about this annoucement here: http://collider.com/asa-butterfield-enders-game/127162/

I personally think Asa is an intelligent, articulate and talented actor but as a fan of the book I'm conflicted. The role Asa has been offered ages from 6 to about 12 years old in the novel and was anticipated by fans to be cast by someone in the range of 10 years old. Because his age is very important, if not crucial, to the original storyline I think a lot of fans of the book are expressing anything from concern to despair.

What do you think? Should Asa take the role and play Ender? Would be nice to hear from some of his fans that are also fans of the book.

I think it's mainly his and probably his manager's choice.

I'm a huge fan of Asa, and the last thing I want to see is people disliking him/his movie because he wasn't the right age for the part.

As for me, I think it's great that he might be in another film. Although, I wouldn't be surprised if he turned this one down.

Thanks for the reply, Bailey.

I should clarify. I have not seen any disparaging remarks or feelings toward Asa for being offered the role. Some fans of the book seem concerned mostly for the outcome of the movie because of Asa's age. Besides, any reasonable person should separate him from the role and from the decisions of the movie company.

Part of me wants to see him in this role because of my familiarity with him and that I know he is very capable. But, part of me also sees that it could play out very poorly for the movie and by extension, Asa. After all, Jake Lloyd may have had a bright movie career ahead of him before Phantom Menace. I'd hate for him to eventually catch part of the blame for "ruining Ender's Game," as some hardcore fans inevitably will do, if nothing else because he will be considered too old for the role.

They better start shooting like in January 2012. Since Asa isn't getting any younger.

According to a link posted up over at the imdb.com Ender's Game message board, nola.com says the movie will start filming February 24th and run through June 8th. http://www.nola.com/movies/index.ssf/2011/11/sci-fi_action_film_enders _game.html
So Asa will turn 15 during filming.

I don't think it matters too much at this point. Just because of his age, if Asa accepts the role, Ender's Game will turn out to be something completely different than the novel. I really like Asa, but the more I think about it, the more hopeful I am that he'll find a different role. Even if it's as an older character in the same movie.

I absolutely love Asa and have no doubt that he could pull off the part, but I do agree that he might be a bit too old now, especially since he seemed to have hit a growth spurt over the past couple of months as well. (Saw him at the premiere last night and he was about 5' 6''.) I suppose we'll just have to wait it out and see if he decides to take the role or not.

I've read the book. It's pretty violent so it makes sense that they age the character a bit.

reply

Maybe they are planning to do some sort of age progression of the character using different actors and he would be the older Ender. Or, maybe they will digitally shrink him like the effect in Captain America. Who knows? However, I think that he is a good choice for the role.

reply

The violence actually is a factor. I read an interview where Asa mentioned Ender's and he said that they've been looking at young actors (8-10) for awhile now but it's hard to find someone that can handle the role at that age. So Asa is probably a lead contender for the part, but nothing is confirmed yet.
