Why does she sound Canadian?
She was born in Washington and went to school in SoCal.
shareWhat does a Canadian sound like? That's like saying all Americans sound the same.
shareHardly. A Canadian sounds like somebody speaking with a Canadian regional accent. That's not to say all Canadians sound alike, since there are several regional accents in Canada.
sharei was born in Bellingham, Washington -- about 20 miles south of the border, and frequently get the comment that i sound "Canadian"... :\
shareShe doesn't sound Canadian to me at all. Seeing as how her Haven show is produced in Canada, it is full of Canadians in the cast. Maybe you're thinking of another cast member? I have talked with quite a few people from Washington state and have mistaken them for Canadians. What does a Canadian sound like? Listen to Gordon Lightfoot or Joni Mitchell singing. The Frenchies in Quebec have their own accents. Of the predominantely English speaking Canadians one of the key words that gives them away is "about". Most pronounce it aboot and I've also heard them pronounce it abutt.
shareYou're right. I met a Canadian person. When she speaks she sounds pretty much like an American from the West Coast. But talk to her long enough and you might pick up a single word or two that she pronounces differently than Americans. That's the giveaway.

Wrong, but thanks for buying into the ignorant American stereotype. No one west of Newfoundland says aboot...
As for the abutt part, I've never heard anyone, anywhere, accent or not, pronounce about like that. At least no one sober.
I'm from Newfoundland, and I've never heard "aboot" uttered by any Newfie. That being said, I HAVE heard it uttered by a fellow I worked for who came from the Kingston/Ottawa area of Ontario. I think "aboot" is an "Upper Canadian" thing.
It's not. I've never heard it pronounced that way in my life except by Americans making fun of Canadians.
