Was leaving TVD the right decision?

Yes. She has two big movies coming out in 2017

2 movies after they open and are a great success they might get called big movies. if they disappear in a month and get laughed at they are not big movies.

Well, she has starred in two big screen movies ever since with such co-stars like Vin Diesel and Ellen Page, so yeah I think it was definitely a GOOD decision to leave that teen vampire soap opera.

If she left because she thought The Vampire Diaries was holding down a huge career in Hollywood, then she shot herself in the foot leaving a steady job chasing an illusion.

When Hollywood really, REALLY wants you, they call you even if you're doing TV. The Seinfeld cast was doing movies in the early 90s, the Friends cast was doing movies in the mid 90s, Steve Carell was doing movies while he was still in The Office... even the other Office actors were popping here and there in some movies. Well, anyway, when Hollywood really wants to test actors, they call them really fast, while they are still a novelty.

The thing with the Vampire Diaries cast... they're TV actors. Supporting actors in movies at best. That's why none of them have really a genuine, prolific movie career.

Now, if Nina just wanted to explore new genres in other TV shows, playing bit parts in Hollywood movies, supporting roles in low profile movies, maybe going to different networks other than the CW... then it was a good move. Instead of being Vampire Girl forever, she could try other stuff.

I love Nina, but I hope she wasn't planning to become the next Jennifer Lawrence or something like that. I do hope she was aiming to do other genres on TV, because I want to see her every week.

Exactly. The problem is I think she expected her fame from TVD to carry over to big film with leading lady type status.

It seems she left TVD, at least in part due to personal reasons rather than just finishing up the run with the rest of the cast (which would only have been 2 more seasons).

TVD would have allowed her to be in the homes of TVD viewers every week for 2 more years.

She would've potentially been able to gain a larger fanbase. Despite declining numbers (which happened due to a move to Friday AND her departure), she would've had more screentime with people who stream the show and catch up later.

Not to mention, she did complicate her relationship with the CW and execs, whether they're willing to admit that publicly or not. Hollywood (and Atlanta) is a small town and IMHO it would've looked better had the headlines read, "Dobrev signed back at the last hour after execs beg her to stay."

Sure she grabbed headlines when she left, but I only jumped on here due to pure curiosity because I was wondering what ended up happening with her career. Had she at least planned her exit better (another sign this was a personal situation), she could've filmed something before her departure that would've allowed her career to remain relevant. Having several films come out in 2017 is great and all but that has allowed a number of other actresses to emerge forcing her to compete for parts...something she may not have had to do back in 2014.

No, this certainly wasn't a Katherine Heigl situation but it wasn't a Jennifer Aniston or Steve Carell move either.


All that being said, she's still a working actress (and not Lindsay Lohan) and as long as she's happy with the decision that's what counts for her in the long run.

The question was, however, was it the best thing for her career to leave TVD.

Yes because show has gone down hill even before she left and she knew that it was and that's why she left . Plus her contract was up and she did not leave because of Ian..that's just with the fans want to think and it's purely made up from the fans.
