How close was to being cast as Spidey?

Hi guys, only recently started watching Community after listening to Childish Gambino. However I go on this guys IMDB page and it is full of Spider-Man comments and posts, so I read and there from what I gathered there was a sort of campaign to get him cast as Spidey. Was that all it was a campaign and speculation or did he ever actually audition for the role. Just want to know what actually happened, thanks guys!

I think it was just a campaign.

But Donald Glover inspired the writers to create Miles Morales, the black Spider-Man (when they saw him on community in the spidey PJs). So there is a link between him and Spidey and that's probably what sparked the campaign.

I think most people have it mixed up now though and talk about a black peter parker, not even knowing a black Spiderman already exists in the person of Miles Morales.
