Donald Glover's contract with NBC

I don't want to bring back the discussion of Donald leaving and how terrible/poor it is, but...
I always thought, that there are contracts with the actors and actresses of TV shows that go for at least seven years.
What is with Donald's contract? Doesn't he have one? Or does the network just let him go cause it´s fine for them?

From what I've heard, the contracts are usually five seasons. But, no, it's not slavery. The actor and the network can negotiate to terminate the contract.

Donald was given two options: a large amount of money and be locked in to do the show for years, or a smaller amount of money but you can walk at any point. He chose the latter.

"Oh, my God. Bear is driving! How can that be?!"

Except considering the fact NBC cancelled community I find that highly unlikely.

I thought it was funny in the Re-pilot when Abed was talking about how “this is just like the last season of scrubs, where Zac Braff only did 6 episodes” and Danny Glover calls him an SOB and says that stuff about “what everything Scrubs did for his career” and he ends up leaving Season 5 after 5 episodes of what was thought to be the last season.

LOL it is possible it is a coincidence but it was probably known he would only do 5 or 6 episodes and they had a chance to get this joke in (however vague) after thinking 5 could be the last season.
