Spanish Language

In Parks and Recreation Aubrey's character comes from a hispanic family, as does Aubrey on her paternal side (her father is Puerto Rican), however, in some scenes she is given lines in spanish, and she does not sound at all like a native speaker. Is it common in the USA for hispanic families not to actually speak spanish properly? Is it a question of the older generation knowing their spanish, but the new generations not learning it, or learning just a little?

It's a bit dirty, but still pretty accurate.

I am surprised you'd call it accurate.

Do you speak every language of your heritage? She's elation on her father's side but that doesn't mean she grew up speaking Spanish in the household. I plenty of people with foreign-born parents, who only speak English. It's more common than you think.

There are a lot of factors as to why a child of latino descent wouldn't grow up speaking the language. I don't know her background well but I am also half latino (mexican). Culturally I'm different than a mexican-american with two Mexican parents and since I grew up in a predominantly white area and only one of my parents could speak spanish it was not seen as beneficial for me.
