This controversy is such bull. If ppl demand a certain color person occupy a certain slot each year, then how is that a "performance based" recognition of achievement? It's not like the academy has never recognized actors of African decent before, infact, they've done a pretty great job since before civil rights were a mainstream issue. This is not fair to future African descending nominees becauase people will think, "well they had to have a black actor in there, so we can check that off the list. Better have him/her win too so people won't think we're are racist." Instead of earning it like Denzel and Freeman and Poitier did, this would be like affirmative action.
I fully support movements like Black Lives Matter and social equality, but there is no fight here.
The issue should not be with the Oscars because they are just a ceremony. The issue is within casting and producing. It is not about affirmative action it is about making sure that every actor has the same opportunities. And trust me they do not. If they did the Image awards wouldn't exist.
shareI agree the Oscars aren't the problem, the big wigs in Hollywood as a whole are the problem. Actors of color are given table scraps as far as roles are concerned. The voters can't nominate performances that aren't there.
The problem I have with Hollywood is that they give white actors who play in flop after flop endless chances but don't let a minority actor have that many flops or their career is over and they are off to straight to DVD land. The quality of roles for Asian, Black and other minorities are just terrible. The whole industry is about propping certain actors up (particularly white males) and nothing else. Hollywood really isn't all that liberal.
@filmtenk
You, like most white people, don't get anything concerning race, as usual, because it's not and never an issue for you. The point is, this is the second year in a row that not a single actor or actress of color has been nominated for anything. The truth is, even when a black actor or actress gives a good performance in a film, Hollywood won't get behind them like they do white actors/actresses all the time. And Hollywood isn't as liberal as these silly right-wingers claim it is---if it was, this wouldn't even be an issue. The Oscars are a way for actors to not only get recognized for a specific performance, but to boost their careers into another level of maximum exposure. That dosen't often happen for black actors/actresses of color, and they don't get the same level of opportunities---mostly white actor get the benefits from it. So,yeah, that's why it's a big deal, because it's white actors/actresses who mostly get all the breaks.
Even Lupita herself, with her Oscar, still really hasn't gotten the solid parts that white actresses with an Oscar win would normally get. I mean, Hollywood raved over her and hyped the hell out of her win, yet the only part she got afterwards was as a stewardess in ON-STOP---I barely remember even seeing her in there. She's also in the new STAR WARS, but she's basically an animated figure,from what I've heard. Usually white actresses with an Oscar win go on to bigger and better things in terms and film roles, but it dosen't seem to have happened in Nyong'o's case---it's as if,someone said on another site,Hollywood dosen't know what to do with her. (They could just put her in a good well-written drama with a solid well-developed showcase role for her, like any other good actress in Hollywood.) She does have some projects lined up, according to UMDB,though.
I disagree about Lupita being unable to find work. Just because she hasnt done 3 films a year since winning her Oscar doesn't mean she's not getting offered rolls. Oscar winners get offered rolls all the time. She's being choosey which is a smart move, because look what happened to Halle Berry post Oscar...she chose so many bad rolls over and over. If she wasn't drop dead gorgeous she probably would have been out of the limelight by now.
Idris Elba could have been nominated for best actor or supporting actor for Beasts of No Nation. I think he would have been if the movie was produced and disrupted by a traditional studio and not Netflix. Acknowledging a great performance from a non-studio like Netflix would set a precedent that I'm sure studios will fight as long as possible (this has nothing to do with race, but, business.) Old school studios want people to buy tickets in a movie theater, not stream a movie from home.
Last year when this controversy occurred, I thought it was nonsense as I do now. But, if it happens a third year in a row, then their may be a problem. Until then, not every issue has to be such a crusade.
Will Smith is obviously bitter about not being nominated for Concussion. But he has been nominated in the past twice. His star is fading, so why not latch onto today's movement and make lemonade in the form of free exposure. Or maybe he just wants to hear himself talk and feel like he's significant for having "a voice."
If you think having a race quota for the Oscars is a good idea then that is your opinion. I truly think it's an awful idea for reasons i stated in my first post.
The film business is cut-throat. There is no sense of "fair" nor does any actor, black or white, waiting
tables or working other tough jobs trying to get noticed, expect fair. Everyone is struggling. I just feel that anyone fanning the flames on this issue (of any race, Mark Ruffalo I'm talking about you) is either easily drawn to certain causes or has an agenda.
Scraps? Maybe because there are hardly aby productive black artist at the beginning?
At least no ones that really matters.
Rowlins / Harry Potter - white; Collins / Hunger Games - white;
Older ones
Tolkien / Lord of the Rings - white; Fleming / James Bond - white (now you want a black James Bond)
From Homer over to Dante, Shakespeare, Goethe, to the great writers of today: where are the great black poets?!
You want black heroes in black stories? Then you have the pull off something on your own.
But you're bitching around that white poets, writers and artists create white stories and white heroes (albeit the even create some colored too).
You want something? Do something, earn it!

Please I'm not talking to klan members here, I want to have a real conversation. You go take your racism doesn't exist b.s and shove it up your racist butt.
shareWhat racist? What he said are facts. White writers shouldn't have to write characters for black people if they do not want to. You cannot force a black people quota on a writer. Where are the black writers? They should be writing those stories. They should be given opportunities. Furthermore, they should stop writing stereotypical black American characters and write interesting characters.
