Can someone explain to me......

What is the difference between big studios and talent agencies pushing particular candidates and of individuals and word of mouth doing the same thing?

I would imagine studios send out all sorts of things through the mail and email, as well as PR firms representing actors and the like. And if I'm not mistaken, don't these people/businesses also send out DVDs for viewing?

And I know that in the past the trade magazine would have ads stamped with something like, "For your consideration."

Just seems like a failed system failing more and getting away from the truly best performances and talent.

The Oscars want to be wined and dined. They don't want the nominees friends to prop up the actor without getting something out of it.

I really don't get what is wrong with a voting member asking another voting member if he or she has seen a particular movie or performance. Now, I do understand the issue if they were lobbying for the actual vote, but not the word of mouth or things like, "My goodness, you have to see 'so and so's performance" or 'you have to see this movie'."

reply

The funny thing is that studios are lobbying for the vote which is completely allowed. I think it's because the academy gets money that way.

reply

But is that an example of 'white privilege' as many are claiming?

reply

Definitely not.

reply

WHO IS CLAIMING THAT?

reply

I’ve been asking the same exact question. The studios can do it but individuals cannot.

Apparently the AMPAS has rules about what kind of campaigns are allowable, stupid rules that Riseborough may have broken. Apparently anything done by an expensive publicist is pretty much okay, but certain kinds of one-on-one haranguing are not. I can't be arsed to look up the exact rules, or find that article that someone linked somewhere explaining the issue, but anyone who cares more than I do can knock themselves out.

The AMPAS needs to review their idiotic rules, not Riseborough's nomination. Because apparently the real issue with her nomination is that she isn't making money for anyone and neither did her movie, so the whole industry sees her nomination as a waste of a moneymaking opportunity.
