Friday Night Lights

So after the end of True Detective I'm looking for more of this guy and I was thinking about indulging in Friday Night Lights, which I assume launched his career. Thing is, I have absolutely zero interest in American football. I'm currently watching the Dwayne Johnson show Ballers, but I quite like it because it's more of a character study than about 'dat football life', if you know what I mean. Would this show be worth watching for someone like me cause five seasons is a lot of time to spend on something that could potentially end up being a binge hate-watch! I'm also super fatigued from all the Paul Woodrough angst so looking for some lighthearted moments (more The Grand Seduction than the cheesy hot mess of Battleship) rather than straight drama.

Also is The Bang Bang Club any good? Ryan Philippe has burned me too many times so I'm automatically wary whenever he's involved.

Friday Night Lights is a great show. It's one of my all time favorites. There's so much more to it than just a high school football team. It's about the lives of these characters and their families, etc. It's very we'll written for the most part, with just one or two exceptions in the whole run of the show. You will love most of the main characters, and hate just a few, lol. These characters and their stories will really draw you in.

As for The Bang Bang Club, it is IMO Taylor's best acting to date. He outshines pretty much everyone else. The subject matter is tough to watch at times though.

Definitely check out Friday Night Lights, Kitsch plays the best character in the entire show imo. He's awesome, the show is awesome. Seasons 1 and 3 are two of my favorite seasons of TV ever.

Bang Bang Club is different. It's got an interesting setting but that has a dramatic undertone as well. If you don't like Philippe, you're probably not going to like it. Kitsch is a light hearted character of sorts but the premise of the movie is very violent and sad, and real for what was going on in South Africa at the time. Seeing the tribal interactions is pretty damn intense.

Have you seen John Carter? If you look sci-fi/action/fantasy it's awesome and he carries the lead really well. It's a shame it was so poorly marketed because it truly is an entreating film if you ask me. Really a gem that falls in line with the Tron/Willow/Legend type Cult Classics of the world.

Savages/Lone Survivor/True Detective/Friday Night Lights are all going to be some variation of him brooding though. That's his money spot.

Madness is like gravity...

It's a much, much better show than Ballers, and that is coming from someone that has enjoyed Ballers. The players in FNL are only playing at high school level so they aren't rich, they're just kids really so unlike Ballers it isn't focused on the glamorous side of the game, and there's also a lot more drama involved rather than comedy. But yeah, each episode generally has 5 minutes or under of football, and the rest of the show is about the lives of the Coach and his players off the field.

Great show, I just started it myself. Kinda realistic for a small town that revolves around high school football. His character is probably the best on the show.

Friday night lights is fantastic and showcases him very well. However if you ever see John Carter run for your life it was horrible everything. You can't fault kitsch because the whole script was just terrible

FNL is a wonderful show. He is so amazing in it, omg.

Friday Night Lights is one of the greatest, most iconic, most treasured TV shows of all time. And I have never given two craps about American football in my life, being a non-American myself.

There is now way you won't love it completely. Taylor is amazing in it, so is the rest of the superb cast. I am actually super jealous of you that you've not had the pleasure of FNL yet and can watch it with fresh eyes.

Bang Bang Club is really good too, and had particular interest for me as a South African who grew up during those turbulent times depicted in the film. Taylor plays the reckless tragic figure of the film, and he's perfect for the part.

I recommend it if you can stomach some pretty ugly stuff that happened during some of the worst periods of Apartheid.

Please let us know what you thought of FNL!
