As ignorant and clueless as Ben Mankiewicz

Another fool that constantly spouts out totally incorrect facts and trivia. If you don't know something, shut up. If you're going to claim something, try verifying it.

I've lost count of how many things this guy gets wrong. TCM seems to admire morons. This most recent example of idiocy was especially moronic. He was discussing the hair color of Anthony Quinn's character in Warlock and described in detail how he dyed his hair blonde and how it was a big thing because it was the only time he dyed his hair blonde for a part. Guess what moron? The hair color was silver/grey to show his age. It wasn't even a little blonde. It didn't even resemble blonde.

All you had to do was watch the movie, dumb ass. Why are you discussing movies you've never seen? You made yourself sound like an idiot yet again, and this one was just sad. You're not even intelligent enough to view an actor on screen and determine something as simple as hair color.

If you claim others did the research like dumb dumb Ben, well that's just as bad. It means you're too dumb or lazy to do your own work, or care whether or not it's right. You're also lying to the audience by claiming you've seen and have opinions about these movies.

You don't deserve the job you have. You too, are a disgrace.

Demonstrated his utter ignorance and stupidity again today, during an intro to King Kong (1933). He claimed Merian C. Cooper enticed Fay Wray to Star in King Kong by promising she would appear opposite the tallest, darkest leading man in Hollywood. He continues to claim Wray thought Cooper was referring to Cary Grant, until he showed her a picture of Kong.

First, these were contract players, so it doesn't seem likely that enticing was really necessary. Second, and much more important, is the fact Cary Grant was years away from being any type of leading man in Hollywood. He had only done his first movie the year before. He was far from a star, and unlikely even huge a household name.

This idiot needs to stop making up bullshit, or stop believing what everyone tells him, or everything he reads online. Two seconds of research couldn't have prevented him from looking like a brainless twit, but I guess a brain is required to have that foresight.

This is a six-year post, I know, but he was correct. In 1972, Fay Wray was interviewed and was asked how she was cast in King Kong.

WRAY: Well, I needed work and Merian Cooper phoned me up and said to come to his offices at RKO. He showed me various sketches of jungle scenes and there was one of a giant ape climbing up the Empire State building. I still hadn’t a clue and when he said, "You're going to have the tallest, darkest leading man in Hollywood," I clapped my hands. I thought first of Coop but he wasn’t that dark. Maybe it would be Cary Grant or Gable?. And then he showed me an eighteen inch monkey and introduced us and I felt vastly cheated. Still, I needed work.

Yet again. His intro to The Gun Alive. He claimed Ford plays a a reformed gunslinger. Not even a little true. (Spoilers ahead) He was never a gunslinger and never even drew on, let alone killed, a man. He was fast because his sheriff father taught him how to use a gun fast and accurately, but Ford's character never liked guns.

Hey Dave, asshole, why don't you try watching the movies you're going to discuss. You truly don't deserve your job.

I know I come across as a tad insane, but I just can't stand people who suck at their jobs, but are permitted to keep them. Thank God it's a rare occasion when I even listen to this twit.

Underdog, you are such an angry young man about TCM hosts--your well-written rants are funny as hell. Now I'm going to go over and see what you have to say about Alicia Malone.

reply

I miss Robert Osborne.

reply

THAT'S saying something! 😂

The reasons why TCM hired who they hired is simple:
* Ben Mankiewicz has a famous last name in Hollywood.
* Dave Karger was hired because he's gay.
* Alicia Malone was hired because she wrote a feminist book on Hollywood.
* Jacqueline Stewart was hired because she is black and has an almost shaved head and talks about race a lot.

As soon as Robert Osborne died and Mankiewicz and the rest of them were running the network, they wanted to prove that they were "enlightened" or politically correct.

With Osborne gone, I don't care if there are intros and outros anymore. Unless they are having a special guest on who is entertaining. The trivia, etc. that the hosts today talk about is easily found on Wikipedia and the American Film Institute Catalog. Eddie Muller is a clear exception, since like Osborne, he is deeply knowledgeable on film.

reply

To Karger and Malone's defense, they had careers before TCM working as "entertainment journalists", whereby they interviewed celebrities on live red carpet events or press junkets. Part of TCM's programming has the host interviewing well-known figures as a special guest. Karger, for example, has a career that mirrors Robert Osborne's, in which he worked as a journalist covering the Oscars before he became a TV host.

I also read that Jacqueline Stewart wrote a master's dissertation on silent films, so I think she is qualified to talk about silent films. But, yes, Eddie Muller is probably the best host TCM has right now. His knowledge and research of film noir is impressive.

reply

Yeah, they had backgrounds in the entertainment industry. And, it DEFINITELY is an industry. Regardless, I think they were hired for the reasons I cited. There are TONS of entertainment reporters and movie reviewers out there. Stewart is the most knowledgeable of the three recent hires. Muller comes across as the most knowledgeable of any of the current hosts. Mankiewicz and Malone have talked about having to "learn on the job." There were movie reviewers who had stepped in previous to the three recent hires as guest hosts, like Michael Phillips. But, we all know why he never had a shot at getting hired.
