Incredibly pretentious and self-important

She was on Craig Ferguson recently and could not have been more off-putting. She went on and on about how evil Capitalism and corporations are and how eco-terrorism and anarchy are terrific. The audience just sat there not knowing how to react. Poor Craig Ferguson tried to get her to talk about something else instead of ranting about politics and she just kept going on and on and on and on like she was God's gift to the Universe.

It's too bad that she's some hippie nutcase wacko. I watched both Another Earth and Sound of My Voice and she gave very nice, natural performances.

Yeah I agree. She seems a bit narcissistic.

Her and her directing/writing partner just seem to be trying way too hard to make themselves seem interesting, when really their movies could just be doing that for them.

Ha i've only just realized who she was. I also thought she was pretentious and liked the sound of her own voice.

hmm, I just watched the interview on youtube, and I didn't notice her pretentious at all as well. Actually, I think she tried to avoid being too detailed about her film. There was only a couple of instances where the conversation went to the movie, and rest went on about owls, Harry Potter, James Bond, her apparently "sexy librarian" look, etc. Given that she was in "Sound of My Voice" and "The Company You Keep"( about cults and the Weathermen Underground respectively ) and co-wrote "The East" which incorporate similar themes, I get the feeling that she could have wrote a thesis on underground, revolutionary movements. But instead, the chat was actually mildly flirty, with some sexual undertones.

I myself can sympathize. I find that talking politics just gives the wrong impression, so I usually find myself avoiding it at work and at casual conversation.

So sayeth the RWA, rightwingnutter, whacko...

Just because she happens to be correct - that's enough to turn you off to her, eh?

Keep on draggin' them knuckles, boy!

I thought she gave a pretty funny interview. Not pretentious at all. Her line about having to use Krav Magna on a capitalist and Craig's surprised reaction gave me a chuckle.

Great post. I don't think she was pretentious in the least. She just isn't the typical, mainstream type actress. I watched the interview as well, and I think she did her best to appeal to the norm.

But, Brit Marling is anything but normal. I see her as the voice of a generation, both in how she articulates the ethos of today's young intellects and through her actions as a revolutionary filmmaker. "Another Earth" absolutely blew me away. The fact that the screenplay was not based on a novel, but completely invented by Marling and Cahill is unique. This film attempts and succeeds at some of the most difficult feats in filmmaking.

I could go on and on... she's just an amazing woman, and I think she will change the world in her lifetime.

I don't think she's incredibly pretentious and self important and annoying like the poster thinks but I also don't think she's that amazing...yet. I liked Another Earth, Sound of my Voice, The East, etc. But to me they're all interesting but flawed films, she has interesting ideas and concepts in her head but I think she needs to continually improve to make something truly incredible and memorable.
