Yes, Iceland still uses the old system of naming that has died out in most of the other nations where they used a patronymic system, the same as the Norse used in the early middle ages and was used in other countries including England also (where it was originally "-ing" instead of "-son"; and or "-daughter" though as we know by many modern surnames "-son" did become more common than "-ing", i.e. Thomson, Johnson...etc...). This was due to Norse settlement in much of North and Eastern England.

Though it must be said that Anita Briem's surname does not follow the usual system and thus she isn't Anita Gunnlaugersdóttir.
