Why is she always playing second fiddle?

I was thrilled when I heard she was going to be in Grease: Live - until I read somewhere she wasn't cast as the lead or even one of the more memorable characters. She's being cast as Marty, the least substantial girl out of all the pink ladies.

Vanessa Hudgens is playing Rizzo? Julianne Hough is the friggin lead? Those two bland actresses? And Keke Palmer, arguably the most talented person cast for the entire production, is playing Marty. Marty? Shocking.

I was also hyped up to watch Scream Queens because I really like Keke and Skyler Samuels. But again, Keke wass not featured as a main character - she plays a secondary character to leads Skyler and Emma Roberts. I found Emma Roberts performance irritable and the show so horribly written, it didn't pass the 3 episode test (fyi: if you can't get past the first 3 episodes of a tv show, it fails the test).

Poor Keke. I don't get it. She's so talented, so funny, so likable. I really hope she gets more lead roles in future.

I agree but I also think she and Nicey are currently stealing the entire show so give it time. Those white ladies are gonna get it sooner or later.

I was surprised that she was cast in Grease period. She's got everything any actress would need to play Marty. But this takes places in the late 1950's and very few schools were integrated then. I live in the South and it wasn't until the Fall of 1971 that I shared a classroom with African American students and that was when I began 7th Grade. Even the college that I go to, the University Of Tennessee At Chattanooga wasn't integrated until the Fall of 1969. When I saw that Keke Palmer was cast, I was thrilled and hope that she gets to do a solo. But I also wondered if her casting is historically correct. Does anybody know when schools on the West Coast were actually integrated? Because in this case, since Grease takes place in the late 1950's casting and race do come into play in the casting here.

Does Grease take place in the south though? If not i'm sure a black Marty wouldn't be that uncommon in the 1950's
