Maps - Comments and Reviews

There was a press screening of Maps today. The reception was, as expected, mixed.

Some review excerpts:

Joblo.com (6/10):

...The good news about MAPS TO THE STARS is that it's a much better film than COSMOPOLIS. While it's still a bit of a mess, for much of its running time it's actually quite funny, with the “inside Hollywood” jokes cracking up the TIFF industry folks at the screening I attended. In addition to Bird, Wasikowska has a haunting quality that makes her a good fit for Cronenberg, while Robert Pattinson nails a small part as the wannabe actor-writer she has a crush on. Even better is Julianne Moore, who plays a kind-of middle aged take-off on Lindsay Lohan, who at her best seems dumb, but gradually reveals herself to be cunning and near-psychotic in her maneuverings around town...http://www.joblo.com/movie-news/review-maps-to-the-stars-tiff-2014-888 #EXMbg32RzQa0AYuY.99

Black Sheep Reviews (5/5):

Throughout his incredibly impressive career, David Cronenberg has created some of the most bizarrely grotesque films and shifted his way from pioneer of the body horror genre to the more accessible drama. It is no secret that I’m a huge fan of his work, but that applies to mostly anything prior to A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE, that is, until now. His latest film, MAPS TO THE STARS might just be his best film of the last 20 years, although I may be alone in saying so....

...Believe me though, when the *beep* finally starts to hit the fan, it really goes flying. The comedy is a surprising addition to Cronenberg’s tone; he actually seems to be having a lot of fun with here, a shift from the usual dark and serious tones of his work. MAPS TO THE STARS is an absolutely brilliant treat for fans of this Canadian auteur. You will be disturbed but you will also be moved, deeply.http://blacksheepreviews.com/maps-stars-review

MAPS TO THE STARS (B+): Satire doesn't get much darker. Excellent ensemble cast makes the skewering of Hollywood always intriguing. #TIFF14

@TimGrierson
MAPS TO THE STARS (B-): As a "Hollywood satire," it's nothing new. As a strange, mean, nasty look at ugly people, it's good enough. #TIFF14

@cbumbray
Maps to the Stars - in a word, confounding. #TIFF14

@robtrench
Maps to the Stars is Cronenberg's most sinister film since Crash. Much better jokes though. #TIFF14

If Maps doesn't get a Canadian R rating, I'll be shocked. #TIFF14

Obligatory Robert Pattinson tweet: has good moments with Mia Wasikowsa. Wish he had more scenes with Julianne Moore. #TIFF14 #MapsToTheStars

@kenjfuj
MAPS TO THE STARS (2014, Cronenberg): striving for human connection in a soulless world (Hollywood), made eerily black-comic. #TIFF2014

MAPS TO THE STARS (cronenberg): not sold on COSMOPOLIS, but this exercise in post-cinema proves he knows what he's doing. creepy. #TIFF14

Maps To The Stars was Cronenberg's best since Eastern Promises and most meaty since Spider

MAPS TO THE STARS: Hollywood is such an incestuous industry, right? Many weird feels about statuettes, Telefilm, urinals, my mother. Mother!

I did not like MAPS TO THE STARS. But at least it was an interesting bad. #TIFF

@ErikDavis
MAPS TO THE STARS is a dark, funny, schizophrenic look at how self-destructive Hollywood really is. Little off, little crazy. #TIFF14

@MBarone
MAPS TO THE STARS: wow, those two hours felt more like six. Basically THE CANYONS but weirder, and worse. Why, Cronenberg?

@davidehrlich
MAPS TO THE STARS: Los Angeles seems like a nice place. #LiveDieRecast #TIFF14

@ian_sandwell
Maps to the Stars is an exquisitely twisted delve into Hollywood depravity. Moore and Wasikowska are both magnificent.

Definitely mixed, lol. Schizophrenic! Thanks for bringing together Tracy!

It sounds like Maps to the Stars is Cronenberg's "comedy", albeit a dark comedy. And that makes me very excited to see it, I am seeing it next week and I can't wait.

Lucky you Susie! Be sure to report back!

I will definitely do that, Sammie!

See? Your country will have the film before US.

Here is a link to the cover for Little White Lies with Julianne Moore and Maps to the Stars. I am not sure if this have been posted already.
