I'm very excited about this movie but I thought it wasn't being filmed until 2017. Does pre-production for an indie movie take 3 months or more? I guess it could 

It most definitely could. I'd say 3-6 months would be about average. A film with lots of special effects or huge set pieces could be a year of pre prod.
