Question about his death?

First off, let me just say that I think it's really sad Don Vito died. But then again, his death didn't exactly surprise me. He had problems with his weight, along with serious alcoholism. But still, Don Vito was my favorite character from Viva La Bam, and it's sad that he passed away.

But anyways, if you look at his official cause of death, it says kidney failure. What I'm confused about are the pictures of him shown before his death. He looked extremely skinny. Almost like an entirely different person. But if you look at the pictures close enough, you can definitely tell that it's him. From my understanding, I know he spent some time in jail. But what I wanna know is, during what time-frame did he become so deathly ill looking? Because if you look at a mugshot picture of him, only a couple years prior to his death, he looks exactly like he did in the TV show. But if you look at his appearance within a year of his death...he looks so different. It's almost unbelievable. And by the way, how many times was he arrested, cause there's a ton of mugshot photos?
