Southgate Has Flopped:- Unpopular Opinion?
Two finals and a semi. On paper, great.
But if you delve deeper, in four major tournament finals Southgate only really has one result which could be claimed as of note.
And that was on their ground in front of a home crowd in that wonk Euro 2020 tournament, against an underwhelming German team with that weird coach, who was scratching his balls and sniffing his fingers or whatever it was...
Otherwise, he's had two tournaments were he couldn't have hoped for the knockout draw on their side to have been any better and some ridiculously easy groups to get out of.
I'm not sure if they couldn't have beaten Spain regardless last night but losing to Italy four years ago was probably his best chance.
Maybe with a less pragmatic approach, they don't even reach the final this year but win it four years ago. But his pragmatic, stick with what isn't hugely failing approach probably gets you further but at the cost that your team isn't really playing good enough football to warrant winning anything.
