Great filmmaker especially if you are British

From Kill List (actually Down Terrace which was before) through to now he has an exellent body of work.

Kill List is a prime example of the general public not liking it (it has a 6. something on IMDB) but he has a cult following and is appreciated in the artsy crowds despite not being artsy i don't think. (he is but he isn't)

On one side he's definitely artsy A Field in England or In the Earth is packed full of surreal imagery and very deep metatextual symbolism and subtexts (i half cringed at writing that last part i don't talk about films in that way but it's words ive seen banded about and fits)

That's the beauty of him though he makes films that are high brow if you want that but also accessible to regular folk. The dialog and interactions are as good as it gets in terms of (that's how people really act) as opposed to a lot of dramas similar but it's still DRAMA you know they know what they are doing it's all heightened whereas this is as natural as i have seen while still getting the point across

Doesn't pull his punches similar to Haneke you feel anything can happen at any time even if the film feels not for you you know there is a random WTF moment coming up at anytime

I love this guy is he the best film maker of all time? no but all his films have substance and he's not a lefty cocksucker by the numbers sellout

I mean he has kind of sold out because he done Meg 2 but i think he needs to do that shit once in while to give him enough freedom to do what he really wants to which is hopefully more English based Thomas Winterburg type shit

Trust me this guy is different league

haha i honestly didn't think anyone would read this so soon. My thought was someone in the future might watch a film of his and head here so i wanted to have something explaining the bare minimum lol.

Are you American per chance?

If so his films are very very English you might even need subtitles at points no joke with the regional accents and the unscripted style but if you get into him he's a goldmine

The obvious two 2 start for newbie is Kill List and Sightseers if you don't like them he isn't for you but if you do there's plenty more where that came from

American Wheatley fan reporting in. Have seen six of his films, with favorites being the aforementioned Kill List, A Field in England and Sightseers, which he "only" directed. Kill List also made me a Neil Maskell fan; already'd liked Michael Smiley at that point, but he's usually a treat. Haven't seen Down Terrace, so adding that to the watchlist, thanks!

I was a big fan of Kill List & a slightly less big but still a fan of a Field in England, & was very interested to see where he'd go.

But I found most of his films after that to be minorly disappointing. I don't know that any of them were disasters, but none of them gave me that kind of 'I have no idea what's going to happen next' excitement. I know a lot of people liked it, but Sightseers was kinda obvious to me, Free Fire & High Rise were great ideas that didn't translate.

I thought In The Earth was return-ish to form. Not quite all the way there, but it had something. In a way it felt like a guy who was flailing in his career & returning to the stuff that made him stand out in the first place. A bit of a retread. Playing the hits. But at least it had some real energy & weirdness & visual panache.

I've seen A Field in England and I really enjoyed that, so I get where you're coming from when you mention surreal imagery etc. I've just watched the trailers for the others and they look good too, so I'll definitely stick them in my watchlist and give then a looksee for sure.
