Accent

Guess you've heard his story about how he acquired it. Not an easy one for an Englishman but he nailed it.

I was actually kind of disappointed when I found out that it wasn't his natural accent. I hope he uses it in more films.

How did he get so good at the accent? I really thought he was Irish. Been a fan of his character but only looked up here after he died.

He listened to podcasts of Northern Irish voices. He got so authentic the people on "Boardwalk Empire" didin't know what language he was speaking, so he had to rein it in a little. He's got a brilliant ear for dialects.

If you mean "Legacy", that is a one-off. Part of BBC's Cold War Season, but sadly not a series of its own. Check him out in "Hello, Carter" at the movies.

It's rather strange seeing you guys say this. In Boardwalk Empire I have always found something amiss with his accent. By this I mean when I hear other accents I just listen to what is being said, but my ear picks up mistakes, a bit like how musicians hear bum notes played by other musicians. I have been picking up something wrong with Charlie Cox's accent, not actually thinking it was wrongly spoken, more like something drawing my attention to it rather than just listening to it. I have just checked and realised it's because it isn't his natural accent.

This tells me he is possibly saying something wrong. I am very familiar with Irish accents, I know many Irish people from both Ulster and and Eire and though I did not think he spoke wrongly, I knew it was not a dialect I have heard before.

Well... I'm not Northern Irish but I've lived there for a year and I'm very familiar with the accent.

I must say this guy really fooled me. I identified his accent almost right from the start, then when they mentioned Sinn Féin, and Coleraine... it confirmed what I thought, that the guy was Northern Irish.

I was surprised to see that he was actually English.

I think only Daniel Day-Lewis's famous efforts in In the Name of the Father and The Boxer were as convincing to me.

I don't think there's anything "off" about his accent. Maybe because I'm used to the Derry/Londonderry accent and that's near Coleraine (if that's the one he was aiming for).


BTW the woman playing Margaret also sounds very convincing to me... I thought she was really Irish. But the Kerry accent is not one I know as well as the Northern Irish one.
